Algebra 1A (Full-Year Course Description)
Algebra 1A is a foundational, full-year course designed to build strong mathematical language, reasoning, and problem-solving skills through the core concepts of linear algebra. Students will learn how to interpret algebraic expressions, work with real numbers, and use algebraic methods to solve and analyze equations, inequalities, and systems. Throughout the course, emphasis is placed on developing fluency with representation (equations, graphs, tables, and written explanations), as well as applying strategies to model real-world and mathematical situations.
In the first half of the Glencoe/McGraw-Hill Algebra 1 curriculum, students focus on essential linear topics including the tools of algebra, properties of real numbers, solving and analyzing linear equations, and graphing relations and functions. Students also extend their learning to linear inequalities and systems of linear equations and inequalities, strengthening both their computational skills and their ability to interpret results.
Course Topics (Chapters 1–7)
Chapter 1 – The Language and Tools of Algebra: algebraic notation, variables, expressions, and foundational tools for working with algebra
Chapter 2 – Real Numbers: operations with real numbers and applying properties to simplify and compute
Chapter 3 – Solving Linear Equations: solving equations using algebraic methods and checking reasonableness
Chapter 4 – Graphing Relations and Functions: interpreting graphs, understanding relations/functions, and connecting equations to graphs
Chapter 5 – Analyzing Linear Equations: using slope, intercepts, and structure to understand linear relationships
Chapter 6 – Solving Linear Inequalities: solving and graphing inequalities and interpreting solution sets
Chapter 7 – Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities: solving systems and reasoning about multiple conditions
